Storytime Returns In-Person to the Library by Brittney Uecker

I have an exciting announcement that I’ve been waiting to share with our library community for a while. Beginning Friday May 21st, our two storytime programs, Books & Babies and PreK/Kinder Storytime, will resume in-person at the Library. Books & Babies (ages 0-2 and caregivers) will be held every Friday at 10:30AM and PreK/Kinder Storytime (ages 3-6) will be Saturdays at 11AM. Both programs will be held in the youth area or outside when weather permits and last approximately 30 minutes with free time to socialize and read with your child afterwards.

The goal of both of these programs is to get kids of all ages and their caregivers comfortable in the library and excited about books and reading. For infants and toddlers, Books & Babies allows for child-caregiver bonding and social interaction through exploratory play. By singing, dancing, and reading with your baby, you solidify their trust in you as you model literacy through imagination and enthusiasm. In PreK/Kinder Storytime, the focus shifts to independence and early reading skills. As we share longer stories, kids can practice sitting calmly, listening to a story, and reading comprehension. They also get to hone their creativity through more complex songs, dancing, and crafts. For both programs, I strive to balance the overall goals of building literacy with providing opportunities for social interaction with peers and fostering interest in books. I also hope to give caregivers ideas for how they can implement stories and literacy skills at home with kids.

I want to thank our incredible patrons for their flexibility and support of our virtual youth programs during the past year, including virtual Storytimes as well as Alphabet Fridays. While these programs were fun to put together, there is nothing that compares to seeing the joyous faces of kids during Storytime. I can’t wait to see all of you again. Don’t mind me if I shed a tear of joy.

There are no sign-ups required and you do not need a library card to attend either storytime program, so this is a great opportunity to show off our library to newcomers and summer visitors. Please contact Brittney Uecker if you have any questions about Books & Babies or Storytime.
