Library to Offer New Saturday Storytime for Pre-school Kids by Brittney Uecker

Beginning on December 7, LPL will begin offering Saturday Storytime at 11:00 a.m. in the youth area. This program will be geared towards kids ages 3 to 6 and will be a chance to share songs, stories, and crafts. In addition, our Friday Storytime at 10:30 a.m. will now be geared specifically towards babies ages 0 to 2 and their caregivers and will focus primarily on songs and playtime.

Though storytime may seem like a simple program to put together, there are a multitude of considerations and complexities that go into offering the best possible storytime. For infants and babies, the benefit of storytime is really about child-caregiver bonding. Through singing, dancing, and reading with your baby, you are solidifying their confidence and trust in you and the joy of seeing each other’s smiles radiates positivity for everyone. Additionally, free playtime with other babies gives your child a chance to build their social comfort around other babies while also engaging in imaginative and exploratory play. As kids grow older, the benefit of storytime shifts to school readiness and independence. As we share more and longer books, kids can practice sitting calmly, listening to a story, and reading comprehension. They also get to hone their creativity through more complex songs, dancing, and crafts. For both groups, I strive to balance the goals of building literacy skills, providing opportunities for social interaction with peers, and fostering interest in books as I build a storytime program. By holding these two distinct storytimes, I will be better able to offer developmentally appropriate programming to each group that meets these needs in the most conducive way for their age.

Friday Storytime for babies and caregivers is held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the upstairs meeting room. Saturday Storytime for ages 3 to 6 will be held every Saturday at 11 a.m. in the youth area starting December 7. The program lasts approximately 30 minutes with free time to socialize afterward. There are no sign-ups required and you don’t need to have a library card to attend, so this is a great opportunity to show off our library to visitors you may be hosting for the holidays. Please contact Brittney Uecker if you have any questions about Storytime.
