In the Stacks #4 Media Literacy
For this episode of In the Stacks, we are getting serious and discussing a topic that is especially pertinent in these oddly
digital times: media literacy. Dani and Brittney break down what it means to be media literate, what skills are necessary
to be actively engaged in media consumption, and how to thoughtfully deconstruct memes and advertisements. We also
chat with Melanie Smith, an English teacher at Fergus High School, about how media literacy is emphasized in the
classroom, and with Deb Hill of the Lewistown News-Argus about the intersection of news and media literacy. Finally, we
talk about the unique responsibility of libraries in teaching media literacy skills alongside providing information and
entertainment to our patrons.
