Embracing Summer By Kari Denison

How can it be already!?  The fair is upon us and we’re more than halfway through summer.  Winter surely doesn’t go this fast!  In fact, I know it doesn’t.

Summer is such a wonderful time of year!  So much to do and so little time.  I have to be ever so careful choosing where to travel and what to do to fit it all in during our fast summer season.

I have always found it difficult to choose ‘favorites’ for almost everything.  So instead of sharing favorite summer things to do, I’ll share with you some summer outdoor activities I greatly enjoy in our little haven called Lewistown, as well as other places in the state.

I’ve always been drawn to water.  Spending time around the water is a high priority for me during the summer months (and all months to be completely honest).  Whether it’s cold springs, hot springs, pools or creeks, you can bet I’ll be taking in as much water time as possible:  Warm Springs, Big Spring Creek, City Pool, White Sulphur Springs, Chico, Norris and Bozeman Hot Springs are my top choices for rejuvenation.

Hiking and trail walking are also highly enjoyable outdoor activities.  Montana is a mecca of trails and spaces to adventure.  I love getting out and about around Central Montana and have dabbled in the great outdoors across the Big Sky state.  I have a lot more mountain hikes to explore – too many to list.  Do you have any recommendations?

Of course, reading finds its way into the days of summer.  Sitting on the deck at home with an iced coffee, cat in lap and dog at foot, is a delightful way to spend a summer evening.  Finding a cool space or tree shade to read in the hot days of summer is optimal use of time and relaxation.  Soaking up some sun at Warm Springs with a good read is always a win.  This summer I’ve enjoyed Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and The Girl Who Drank The Moon by Kelly Regan Barnhill. I’ve also enjoyed dabbling in Verbal Judo by George Thomspon and Primal Leadership by Daniel Goleman.

So much to read, so little time. And, just so you know, the library’s collection has new additions monthly.  Our collection continually grows, offering patrons a wide selection including the newest releases on our media and book shelves.  Keep current with our newest releases on the Lewistown Public Library website, Facebook page and the ‘New To Us’ book shelf at the library. Come talk to us about what’s new, and, don’t forget, we take title recommendations as well.
